Resources Available from the Dean's Offices

College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA)

The College of Community and Public Affairs dean's office coordinates a mentoring matching program in which faculty of all ranks are asked to identify their interests in receiving mentor support from a colleague or serving as a mentor in one or more of the following areas: research, teaching, service, and work-life balance. A list of interests is maintained and made available to all faculty to make the process of selecting and approaching a potential mentor easier for those who seek such support. The CCPA dean, all department chairs and a faculty member appointed by the dean to serve as coordinator of the Mentoring Program are all available as resources to individuals who would like more assistance in choosing among the options available. The goal of the program is to leverage the strengths among CCPA faculty to support the needs of others at all stages of professional development.

Harpur College Dean's Office

The Harpur Dean's office regularly provides opportunities for faculty development and support, including the Dean's Research Semester Awards (which grant teaching releases to junior faculty to enhance their scholarship prior to tenure review), Mileur Faculty Development Grants (which provide funds to further the scholarly and creative work of Harpur faculty while encouraging them to seek external support for that work), and several mechanisms of support to bring external speakers to campus to increase exposure and collaborative opportunities. School of Management (SOM)

The School of Management faculty development committee (FDC) serves as a resource for junior faculty. The committee provides access to collegial advice/assistance for research and teaching. The resources include faculty mentoring and 360-feedback of teaching. The FDC chair assigns mentors to guide junior faculty in establishing a research agenda, developing/improving instructional pedagogy, and integrating into the culture of the school and university. The 360-feedback of teaching initiative engages two senior faculty members (one in the focal instructor's area and the other outside the instructor's area) to conduct classroom visits and provide the junior faculty with specific developmental feedback for teaching. The FDC chair also solicits feedback from students which is shared with the junior faculty. Starting Fall 2013 all assistant professors are scheduled to undertake the 360-feedback of teaching. The FDC also organizes workshops and retreats that address trends and best practices in teaching and research.

New Faculty Orientation

New faculty orientation, which takes place each year in August, is a day-long immersion in effective practices for teaching and research.  The 2015 program is provided as an example; updated information on the 2016 program will be provided as soon as it is available.
