Volunteer spotlight: Alumni Golf Classic
By Steve Seepersaud
For several years, Alex Racketa '08 competed in the Alumni Golf Classic and said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He now does more than tee it up with his foursome. As a volunteer on the tournament's committee, he helps bring in sponsor support and provides input on how the event can provide the best possible experience for alumni and members of the local community.
"We actively try to distinguish ourselves from other events by having a more welcoming environment and more chances to socialize than the average event," Racketa said. "The Alumni Golf Classic strikes a perfect balance between a casual atmosphere and a competitive level of play."
The Alumni Relations office worked with the committee to hold the 2013 Alumni Golf Classic on Aug. 2, at Vestal Hills Country Club. Nearly 150 people participated, supporting the Alumni Association's Legacy Scholarship. This endowed fund supports the families of Binghamton University graduates.Sara Delmar '06, MS '09 works at the University and has been involved with the alumni office through positions in the Undergraduate Admissions Office and Decker School of Nursing, as well as volunteering at local alumni events. Though she hasn't golfed in the classic, she found getting involved with the tournament committee to be a natural extension of her volunteerism. She has helped to bring sponsors to the Alumni Golf Classic, and assists with check-in and raffle ticket sales on the day of the event.
"That's the great thing about the Alumni Relations Office, once you say you're interested in helping they get you involved in everything," Delmar said.
In its nearly 10 years of existence, selling out is almost a given since the tournament has maintained a number of devoted foursomes and gained enough new teams.
"I love how much it has grown in popularity and I look forward to seeing the alumni who come back to the area to play and reminisce with old friends," Delmar said. "I am also overwhelmed by how well our scholarship is doing as a result! It's amazing what Binghamton University alumni will do for a great cause."
The volunteers say the tournament is a great avenue for beginning and continuing friendships - both on personal and professional levels.
"You reminisce a little, and put on a fun event. After that, finding a new business contact or strengthening an existing relationship is just icing on the cake," Racketa said.
