Volunteer spotlight - Sean Hembrick '09

By Steve Seepersaud

Many young people like to put posters on their walls, showing images of their favorite movie stars, rock musicians or athletes. However, Sean Hembrick '09 clearly remembers the day he met a teenage girl who wanted to take home his Binghamton University poster.

Sean Hembrick '09Hembrick was at her high school, representing Binghamton as an alumni admissions volunteer. Since shortly after he graduated, he has spoken to high school students at about seven college fairs per year. For his efforts, the Alumni Association presented him with the 2011 Alumni Admissions Volunteer Recognition Award. (Hembrick is at right in photo with Alumni Association President Raymond G. Russolillo '80.)

"I'm really passionate about my school," Hembrick says. "Any opportunity I get to talk about Binghamton -- I'm happy to do it. The students I meet are always really excited to talk about Binghamton."

Hembrick, who lives in Manhattan, helps the University with recruiting in a number of inner-city high schools. He says it's rewarding to help make a difference in a young person's life.

"I see a lot of kids not doing much with their lives, just hanging out at the corner store," Hembrick says. "I really want to encourage kids to apply to college. I want to help them fulfill their dreams."

Hembrick is studying toward a master of fine arts degree at Queens College and plans to pursue a teaching fellowship and write a novel. He is also tutoring high school students in the city. When he's not attending college fairs, he fields contacts from students he meets.

"They e-mail me and ask questions about Binghamton," Hembrick says. "They let me know they're going on a campus tour, or they tell me they've applied and want to know what else they can do to help their chances. It's so exciting to see they're that dedicated."
