Crew alumni to reunite, give back to students
By Steve Seepersaud
This weekend, the clock springs forward. The days are already getting longer and, in the Northeast, there have been doses of spring intermingled with nature reminding us that winter isn’t quite over. For Crew Club alumni, it’s easy to remember the excitement and camaraderie of the springtime when boats hit the water.
This group of alumni will come back to Binghamton next month to relive the fun they had while they were students, and help the current team members get the most of their experience. The club’s reunion is scheduled for Saturday, April 22; alumni will watch the students compete at the 19th Annual Busfield Memorial Regatta in Owego, then have dinner at the Lost Dog Café.
“Crew was such a big part of my life for four years,” said Lisa Fischoff ’10, who is leading the reunion planning efforts. “I made a lot of great memories and it’s great to be able to give back.”
In 2016, the former rowers created the Binghamton Crew Alumni Group to continue supporting the team through mentoring and coaching students, planning special events and raising funds for equipment.
“Just like any student organization, crew is constantly turning over,” Fischoff said. “Having alumni involved gives the group a sense of continuity.”
The club’s students and alumni have been a driving force behind the John McKenna IV Memorial 5K Run in Binghamton, which attracts more than 300 runners annually. McKenna was a rower while he was a student and graduated from Binghamton in 1998. He was killed in August 2006, during a tour of duty as a United States Marine in Iraq.
“It’s great to see how the 5K has expanded to the local community,” she said. “It’s not just for students or rowers. It has only been around for about 11 years, but feels like a longer tradition.”
The Binghamton Crew Alumni Group wants to hear from any alumni who participated in crew prior to 2000. Those alumni, or anyone else who wants to stay connected to crew alumni events, should contact the group at email@example.com if they're not already receiving emails.
