Statement on basketball investigation
As you might have noticed in the media lately, there has been some discussion of recent events involving the men’s basketball program and the University is taking the issue very seriously.
President Lois B. DeFleur has made significant changes to the leadership of the athletics program and the men’s basketball program. She has launched an internal top-to-bottom review of the program that will result in a new supervision and recruitment plan. The President also called for an independent external investigation of the athletics program, currently being conducted under the auspices of the SUNY Board of Trustees Executive Committee. This review will ensure that the University is following America East and NCAA policies and procedures, and that we are providing the best possible experiences our student-athletes. We are confident that these decisive actions will form the cornerstone of a stronger and better program.
We are pleased that the campus and the community have continued to show support during this transition. When the men’s basketball season tipped off against Bloomsburg on Nov. 14, 3,200 fans filled the Events Center to support the team that, admittedly, has experienced some well-publicized problems in recent months. We have every confidence that under the leadership of interim coach Mark Macon, this group of student-athletes will represent the University’s high behavioral and academic standards. No doubt, it will be a tough season, but this team still deserves your support.
