The Alumni Association sponsored a VIP Happy Hour at Flashbacks in downtown Binghamton on Sept. 24, during Communiversity, an event which brings the campus and local communities together each fall. Proprietor Rich David, MPA '02, opened the club a few hours early that day to accommodate this special alumni-only event. Among the guests were Saif Rifat '10 and Swaati Puri '10. See photos from this event at the Alumni Association's KodakGallery site.
Later that evening, dancers of all skill levels filled the Mandela Room at the University Union to celebrate the 15-year anniversary of the University's Ballroom Dance Team. Beginner and intermediate salsa and cha-cha dance lessons culminated in a social dance and Rueda demonstration by the Salsa Music Appreciation Club. Ida Jones, MS '04, PhD '09, taught the dance lessons; she was the captain of the dance team from 2004-06 and is an adjunct lecturer at Broome Community College.
“What happens is, is you never quite leave,” Jones says about her continued participation in team practices and events. “You don't just graduate and are then out. You are a member for life.”
Angie Godoy, a senior rhetoric and political science major and the current team captain, was thrilled to have Jones and other alumni at the event. “It's great because they provide further guidance,” Godoy says. “They provide resources and workshops. Alumni help keep the dance team together.”
The event was co-sponsored by the Binghamton University Alumni Association and the Southern Tier Dance Chapter #3011. See more pictures from the event at our photo sharing site.
