By David O'Brian

Binghamton University BearcatsBinghamton University reeled in a number of academic accolades during the spring semester. In addition to attaining a 3.17 overall GPA, a conference-best 195 student-athletes were named to the America East 2011 Spring Academic Honor Roll.

In order to be named to the Honor Roll, a student-athlete had to attain at least a 3.0 GPA during their semester of competition. Of the 195 Binghamton student-athletes named to the 2011 America East Spring Honor Roll, 100 of them earned at least a 3.5 GPA. In addition, Binghamton had a conference-best 67 percent of its student-athletes make the list.

"We're very proud of the continued academic accomplishments of our student-athletes," Athletic Director Jim Norris said. "Having the largest number of Honor Roll students in the America East Conference for the spring semester is a real testament to the quality of the people in our program and the priorities of our campus and department."

In terms of individual sports, Binghamton had the most Honor Roll selections among America East schools in baseball (tied Hartford with 18), men's lacrosse (25), softball (17), men's tennis (10), women's tennis (tied two schools with seven) and men's track & field (35).

Overall, Binghamton's 424 student-athletes compiled the highest semester average that the athletic department has posted since fall 2001. Binghamton student-athletes have earned at least a 3.0 GPA in 11 consecutive semesters.

Our men's tennis team, men's and women's lacrosse teams and softball squad all turned in the highest overall GPA in the America East in their respective sports.
