ELI Conversation Pairs

ELI Conversation Pairs is a volunteer program in which native speakers of English are paired with non-native English (ELL/ESL/EFL/ELI) speaking students and asked to spend at least one hour a week together in conversation. The purpose of the program is to give ELL students more opportunities to converse in English outside of the classroom and to provide them with a person whom they can question about American language and culture. In addition, the native speakers benefit from the opportunity to get to know someone from another culture.

English Conversation Pairs has been quite successful for the last 20+ years. Participating ELL students have reported that their English has improved, and native-speaking students have enjoyed learning about other cultures and helping a fellow student. Both groups have been enthusiastic about the opportunity to make new friends.

  • Information for Non-Native English Speakers

If you're like many Binghamton University ELI students, you may find that, for a variety of reasons, you have few opportunities outside of class to hear English being spoken and to speak it yourself. This lack of opportunities to practice English may slow down your learning of the language and perhaps prevent you from doing your best work in your courses. What can you do about this situation? One answer is to participate in the English Conversation Pairs Program.

The next organizational meeting will be from 4:45pm-6:oopm in UU111, on Thursday, February 2nd. You will meet your partner here. After that, each pair will decide when and where they will meet. If you join this program, you should be committed to spending one hour a week in conversation with your partner, even if you are busy. You should also plan to call your partner sometimes to arrange your meetings; don't let your partner do all the work!

  • Information for Native English Speakers

If you would like to help a fellow student improve his or her English abilities and learn about another culture yourself, then you may wish to participate in English Conversation Pairs.

ELI participants will be both undergraduate and graduate students. Some have graduated from American high schools but still tend to spend most of their time with speakers of their own language.

The next organizational meeting will be in the Mandela Room from 4:45pm-6:00pm on Thursday, February 2nd. At that time, ELI instructors will meet with you to offer suggestions and assistance, and you'll meet your partner. You will receive information via email in the first few weeks of the semester regarding the organizational meeting.
