Differentiated Igneous Intrusions


Photo 1 - The Bassistoppen sill cross-cut by two sets of dikes: 1 pre-tilting and one post-tilting. East Greenland. (Naslund, 1989).

 

Photo 2 - Uttentals Sund, Kangerdlugssuaq, East Greenland. The Skaergaard intrusion is tilted ~20 degrees towards the south, and as a result, the N-S fjord cuts the intrusion from the basal contact to the roof in an almost continuous exposure.
Photo 3 - Detailed sampling of the Palisades sill has revealed an extensive differentiation trend from Mg-rich diabase (Mg#=70) at the floor and roof contacts to Fe-rich diorite (Mg#=10) at the sandwich horizon.
