Translation Studies Certificate

The Translation Research and Instruction Program (TRIP) offers a Certificate in Translation that provides students with practical training and introduces them to the formal study of translation. It collaborates with various master's programs in the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences and in the College of Community and Professional Affairs.

TRIP has been able to offer translation practice from Spanish and French on a regular basis. Depending on need and availability, translation instruction involving other source languages (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, German, Korean, and Russian) may be offered. Those interested in languages other than Spanish and French are advised to contact the TRIP co-directors to check whether instruction is available in a given semester.

The certificate application deadline is rolling.

Admission Requirements*

Applicants must submit the Graduate School's required admission materials:

  • Online graduate degree application and application fee
  • Official transcript(s) from each college/university at which you earned a degree (Current Binghamton University graduate students or individuals also applying to a master's or doctoral program at Binghamton University do not need to submit transcripts with their certificate application.)

Important note: Funding is not available to non-degree students completing certificate programs. Certificate students are not automatically admitted to master's or doctoral programs. They must meet the admissions requirements of those degree programs and be accepted. Students may concurrently apply for a certificate and a Binghamton University graduate degree program. However, a student cannot be awarded a certificate twice, nor can a student apply work for one certificate to a different certificate. Learn more about graduate certificate programs.

Applicant Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have an adequate written command of English, into which they will generally be required to translate, as well as a near-native command of a second language, which will generally be their source language.

Students who have not had any experience with translation are advised to take one semester of the translation workshop before formally applying to the program. After the first semester, the TRIP director will evaluate students' performance and advise students either to apply or improve their language skills before they pursue the Certificate.
