 Combined Degree Program in
BA in Biology and MAT in Adolescence Education

Biology Adolescence Education (Grades 7-12)

This special combined BA/MAT degree program accommodates the needs of a select group of Harpur College students who wish to efficiently combine an undergraduate science degree with a graduate level teacher certification program. (The combined degree programs include the entire current Harpur science BA or BS degree programs and the current MAT programs in biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics, all registered with New York State Education Department.) The combined degree program saves students one semester of time relative to the separate, sequentially taken BA and MAT degrees.

The combined program provides an opportunity for a limited number of outstanding liberal arts students to graduate in five years with a science BA/BS and an MAT degree. To be eligible for the combined program, a student must have entered Binghamton University at the beginning of the freshman year and completed the ensuing five semesters at  Binghamton University with a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or better in your major discipline and overall. (Transfer students are not eligible for the combined program, but may apply to the MAT program.)

Interested students are advised to meet with the MAT Science Education Coordinator in the Graduate School of Education and with their advisor in the Sciences Department of Harpur College at the beginning of their sophomore year to ensure that all requirements are met in a timely manner and to confirm eligibility for the combined degree option. Students fill out an intent form and submit materials informally and directly to the Graduate School of Education Combined Degree Advisor by December 15 of their junior year.

If students are granted permission to continue as a MAT student in the 5th year, a formal application is then submitted online to the Graduate School (the same as for the MAT program), at http://www2.binghamton.edu/grad-school/prospective-students/how-to-apply/index.html . As with the MAT program, letters of recommendation should preferably be from science professors familiar with the applicant's work, or from the supervisor of an extended position held by the applicant in the field of education. GRE scores should be sent to the graduate school by January 15.
