Childhood & Early Childhood Education
Preservice program leading to the
Master of Science in Education (MSEd) degree
Binghamton University’s preservice program in Childhood & Early Childhood Education is a new and innovative master’s degree program that leads to multiple New York State teaching certifications, allowing graduates to work with children from birth through grade six in a number of different roles. During this two-year, full-time program, you will take a range of courses and you will work with children in several different fieldwork and student teaching placements. These experiences will offer opportunities for you to make connections between theory and practice and develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to help all students be successful in school. Under the guidance of top-tier professors and highly-qualified teachers in partnership schools and early childhood programs, you will become a teacher with clearly-defined commitments as well as the ability to make a real difference in the lives of children and their families.
Today’s children have abilities and needs that are far more diverse than a generation ago. In order to prepare you to understand and respond to your students’ diversity, we offer two pathways towards your masters’ degree:
2) Childhood, early childhood, and special education
Both pathways involve intensive, rigorous coursework and field experiences (including summer and winter sessions) among a small cohort of graduate students. We pride ourselves on close faculty-student relationships as well as the meaningful friendships that develop among our students and between students and their mentor teachers. A strength of our program is that our faculty work closely together with the same goal in mind: We collaborate to prepare highly-qualified teachers who maximize educational opportunities for all children by providing them with engaging learning experiences that are challenging and relevant to their lives.
You are eligible to apply to our preservice program if you have completed a bachelor’s degree in the liberal arts with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Please be aware that the New York State Education Department requires teachers to have a distribution of coursework in the Arts & Sciences, which must be completed before you are eligible to start this program. Please contact Tami Mann (email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 607-777-5322) as soon as possible so she can review your transcript to determine if there are prerequisites you need to fulfill.
