University Women

Established by Wanda Bartle in 1947, University Women started as the faculty wives’ club. Today, it is the organization for women faculty and staff members at Binghamton University, as well as women spouses of Binghamton University faculty and staff members. Members range in age from their 20s to their 80s.

The organization’s formal name is the University Women’s Club, but most people refer to it as University Women. At the organization’s core are approximately 20 activities groups that form around a common interest. There are book groups, a scrapbooking group, cooking groups, hiking groups, and more. University Women also supports scholarships for women students at Binghamton University. To retain active membership, which includes eligibility to attend programs and meeting and join interest groups, each member must pay annual dues. Membership dues are $20 per academic year, with a complimentary first year for new visiting faculty or spouses of new visiting faculty. Annual dues are $20.00, and a late fee of $5 is assessed for those who submit their annual dues after November 1.

The larger organization holds one meeting each semester (typically at the Vestal Town Library). Each meeting typically features a social hour and a speaker as well as a short business meeting. The fall meeting also provides an opportunity to learn about the various interest groups and sign up for the groups of your choice.
