Garn runs fifth-fastest 800 meters in nation
February 19, 2015Tweet
Senior middle distance runner Jesse Garn took a major step toward advancing to the NCAA Indoor Championships by running a time of 1:46.98 in the 800 at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 14. It is the fifth fastest time at the NCAA Division I level this year.
Garn placed third behind Edward Kemboi of the host Cyclones (1:46.09) and Andres Arroyo of Florida (1:46.78). Kemboi’s time is the fastest in the nation this season.
“It’s super exciting right now,” he said afterwards. “Coach Acuff and I had talked about just running my race and I was able to stay composed. This is a huge surge of confidence for me heading forward.”
“This was a great race for Jesse against a very fast field,” Acuff said. “We were really trying to figure out where we should take him to put up a good time and this worked out perfectly for us.”
The top 16 times as of March 8 will advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships. That meet will be held March 13-14 at the University of Arkansas.
Last week, Garn won the Penn State Sykes/Sabock Challenge with a time of 1:49.68. At the time, it was the 13th-fastest NCAA Division I time of the year.
