March 29, 2011Tweet
The women’s tennis team (6-8) closed out its spring trip that featured five matches in six days with a 4-3 victory over the host University of Richmond Spiders (9-5) on March 26. The Bearcats snapped Richmond’s five-game winning streak to conclude the trip with a 2-3 mark.
In doubles play, Binghamton secured the early point with victories at second doubles from senior Yulia Smirnova and junior Jillian Santos along with an 8-1 win by juniors Marina Bykovskaya and Emma Leibowicz. The junior classmates avenged their only loss of the season against South Carolina State with the decisive outcome at third doubles, improving to 7-1 as teammates.
Senior Anna Edelman posted a three-set win at the top singles spot, raising her season singles record to 28-7, 10-4 in duals. The middle of the lineup helped secure the win for Binghamton. Smirnova tallied a 7-5, 6-0 triumph at third singles, while Bykovskaya managed a straight-set win at the fourth slot to propel Binghamton to the decisive fourth point.
The Bearcats are back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 3, in the team’s lone home match of the season against Fairleigh Dickinson.
