Junior forward Logan Roberts and graduate student forward Pascal Trappe each netted a first-half goal, powering Binghamton (6-4-1, 1-0-0 AE) to a 2-1 win over Vermont (5-4-1, 0-1-0 AE) in an America East men’s soccer game on Oct. 3 at Virtue Field in Burlington, Vt. The victory marks the Bearcats’ third conference-opening win in four seasons.
Roberts’ goal, which was his first of the year, came in the 17th minute. He took a pass from senior midfielder Tucker Sandercock and fired it into the net from close range.
Trappe, meanwhile, was in the right place at the right time in the 32nd minute to score his team-best third goal of the year. After an initial Bearcat shot off a corner kick hit the crossbar, he banged in the rebound to make it 2-0.
Brian Wright of Vermont trimmed the deficit to 2-1 when he scored his team-high sixth goal of the season. Skylar Davis and Loftur Eriksson were credited with the assists.
The Bearcats, however, were able to hold on for the victory.
“I thought we were terrific, especially in the first half,” head coach Paul Marco said. “This was a very tight game and we were fortunate to get a pair of goals in the first 45 minutes.”
Vermont, which finished with a 9-8 advantage in shots, had gone 3-0-1 in their first season at Virtue Field prior to the game against Binghamton. A crowd of 675 turned out for the Catamounts’ Homecoming Weekend game.
“Vermont is a good team and their crowd today was quite good,” Marco said. “I was hoping our guys would be up for the battle and they showed great focus and were pretty disciplined.”
Junior goalkeeper Robert Moewes made a pair of saves for Binghamton.
NOTES: Binghamton recorded its first win at Vermont since Oct. 24, 2009, when it also won 2-1. … The Bearcats now have three road wins this season, having also beaten then No. 28 Ohio State (Aug. 30) and Cornell (Sept. 22).
