Bregartner, Lynch lead baseball team to a sweep over UMBC

Senior right fielder Peter Bregartner belted two home runs and drove in five to pace Binghamton baseball (20-20, 12-4 AE) to an 8-2 win over visiting UMBC (7-33, 0-16 AE) on May 8, at Varsity Field. The Bearcats won for the 16th time in their last 21 games to even their overall record and maintain their hold on second place in the America East standings.
Bregartner drilled a two-run shot over the fence in right field in the second inning to put Binghamton ahead 2-0. He then highlighted a four-run third inning with a sky-high two-out, three-run home run to right. Earlier in the inning, junior first baseman Dave Ciocchi ripped an RBI single to right.
Ahead 6-0, Binghamton added two unearned runs in the fourth before the Retrievers got on the board with two unearned runs in the sixth.
Sophomore Jay Lynch scattered eight hits in seven innings and didn’t allow an earned run. Lynch (5-4) struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.
Bregartner wound up 2-for-4 with five RBI. Senior left fielder Corey Taylor went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and senior catcher C.J. Lukaszewski went 2-for-5.
Second-place Binghamton welcomes league-leading Stony Brook to Varsity Field for a crucial three-game set Friday and Saturday, May 14-15. Friday’s opening game begins at 3:30 p.m.
