Magrath announces athletics director search committee
June 15, 2011Tweet
President C. Peter Magrath has announced the formation of the search committee to assist in the selection of the University’s new athletics director.
The search committee, which will be chaired by Michael McGoff, vice provost for strategic and fiscal planning, includes representatives from Binghamton University’s faculty and staff, athletics department personnel, the Binghamton University Foundation and student-athletes. James Norris, Binghamton’s director of athletics, will also serve on the search committee in an ex-officio capacity.
The search committee is expected to begin meeting in the next few weeks. They will screen and interview qualified athletics director candidates before recommending finalists to Magrath, who will make the final selection. Magrath has indicated that the committee’s goal is to have a new athletics director named before Norris’ departure in December.
In making the announcement about the search committee, Magrath also took the opportunity to recognize Norris for his service to Binghamton University.
“I thank and commend Jim Norris for his tireless efforts,” Magrath said. “During his time as athletics director, Jim has provided crucial stability and hands-on leadership to the program which has put us in the best possible position for a successful transition to a new director. I am also pleased that Jim has agreed to serve on the search committee until his retirement at the end of the year. While we conduct the search, Jim will serve as full director.”
The new designation, which will be the only change to Norris’ employment at Binghamton, means that he will be able to drop the “interim” in front of his title.
