Men’s soccer team places third at home tournament
September 19, 2011Tweet
Senior midfielder Ryan Walter scored in the 86th minute, leading Binghamton (3-3-0) to a 1-0 victory over Rider (1-5-0) in the final round of the Binghamton Men’s Soccer Tournament on Sept. 18 at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats finish third in the event. Earlier in the day, Albany clinched first place with a 2-0 win over Central Connecticut.
Walter dribbled from the left of the goal. He fired a shot that Rider goalkeeper Jason Giordano was unable to get a clean handle on and went into the net. It was the Binghamton captain’s first goal of the season.
“We are delighted to get the win,” head coach Paul Marco said. “Especially after dropping our match on Friday. It took a while to get the goal, but it was a great strike by Ryan.”
Binghamton outshot Rider, 11-10, but Giordano made six saves to keep the game close. Sophomore Anthony Sokalski, meanwhile, stopped three shots to record his first career shutout.
The Bearcats dropped their opening-round game in the tournament to Central Connecticut, 1-0, as Alpha Dioubate scored in the 72nd minute. Dioubate took advantage of a turnover deep on the Bearcats’ side of the field. The Binghamton defense was attempting to get the ball back to sophomore goalkeeper Chris Hayen, but Dioubate intercepted the ball at the top of the penalty box and fired it into the net.
