November 21, 2011Tweet
Binghamton wrestling produced three placewinners at the Cornell Body Bar Invitational, held Nov. 19 at Newman Arena in Ithaca. The Bearcats were without four starters and finished ninth out of 12 in the team scoring.
Freshman heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski reached the finals for the second straight tournament to start his collegiate career. Gwiazdowski won four matches before suffering a 5-2 loss to 16th-ranked Kyle Frey of Drexel in the title bout. One of Gwiazdowski’s wins was a first-period pin of Cornell’s Jace Bennett in the quarterfinals. He improved to 8-1 overall.
Juniors Donnie Vinson (149) and Nate Schiedel (184) placed third in their respective weights.
Vinson, ranked No. 7 in the nation, was seeded first and went 3-1. His title run was stopped in a tiebreaker (4-1) against Steve Santos of Columbia in the semifinals. Earlier, Vinson rolled to an 11-4 first-round win followed by an 11-2 major decision in the quarterfinals. Vinson rallied to post a 3-1 decision over Owen Wilkinson of Lock Haven to capture third place.
Schiedel, the No. 2 seed, won twice before losing 5-1 to Jon Fausey of Virginia in the semifinals. He rebounded to score a 10-2 major decision over Fred Garcia of Lock Haven in the third-place match.
Junior 125-pound Derek Steeley won four matches but fell one win short of placing.
“It was a pretty good weekend,” head coach Pat Popolizio said. “The guys showed a lot of fight and intensity. We made some technical mistakes but it’s early in the season. We will try to get healthy for the Northeast Duals (this weekend).”
