University hosts annual food drives for families in need
December 1, 2011Tweet
Binghamton University students, faculty and staff will bring joy to the lives of needy families through various holiday drives scheduled for the coming weeks.
As part of the annual Hand to Heart Holiday Project, thousands of donated items will be sorted into more than 1,500 gift bags starting at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, in Rafuse Hall located in the Dickinson community. Sorting should take a few hours and then bags will be delivered to the Salvation Army for distribution. A total of 120 bags additional bags will be picked up for delivery to the Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference.
Each year, Residential Life and the National Residence Hall Honorary organization team up with the Salvation Army and the Children’s Home to make the holiday season a little brighter for needy Binghamton-area children. Binghamton University’s Professional Employee’s Council (PEC) is also participating in the holiday gift program for the Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference.
The 22nd annual Student Association Holiday Drive, “Operation SAnta” will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the Old Union Hall. Gifts such as toys, clothing and food certificates will be collected and distributed to families in the Binghamton School District. Tables will be set up to sort the gifts, which will then be transported to the schools and distributed to the families.
Toys for Tots drives are also being hosted by students in the College of Community and Public Affairs, as well the University Parking Services Department.
This Chanukah, students plan to light up hundreds of lives through the Binghamton University Chanukah Toy Drive. All toys will be delivered to children suffering from cancer. Individuals can contribute by visiting http://www.JewishBU.com/ToyDrive.
