Binghamton University’s certificate program to help prepare educational leaders


       The School of Education at Binghamton University, State University of New York, will launch a new graduate program in educational leadership this fall. The Certificate of Advanced Studies, or CAS, is a post-master’s degree program designed to prepare educational leaders to serve in PreK-12 schools and school districts.

        “The CAS offers experienced teachers new opportunities to extend impact beyond their classrooms and specialty areas,” said Marilyn Tallerico, coordinator of the program and professor in the School of Education. “It engages a rigorous curriculum at a university recognized for its strong academic programs, distinguished faculty and affordable tuition.”

        Successful completion of the CAS and other state requirements will allow Binghamton University to recommend qualified students to the New York State Education Department for administrative certifications as school building leaders and/or school district leaders. State data indicate that 74 percent of principals plan to retire by the year 2011, and 63 percent of superintendents expect to retire by the year 2008.

       “This program addresses critical needs to enhance the pool of high-quality candidates to fill anticipated vacancies in elementary and secondary school leadership roles,” Tallerico said.

       The CAS also complements existing strengths of the School of Education’s teacher preparation programs and expands the University’s reach to shape the quality of future administrators. Anchored in national and state standards, the eight-course, 32-credit program of study includes 20 hours that may be credited as electives toward a doctorate.

       The CAS initiative capitalizes on an existing partnership among the Broome-Tioga Board of Cooperative Educational Services, and the Binghamton University’s School of Management and the School of Education. For more than eight years, the three have coordinated the Southern Tier Leadership Academy, a non-credit program for promising teachers interested in exploring their leadership potential.

       Funding from the Stewart W. and Willma C. Hoyt Foundation has contributed to research and curriculum development for the CAS in educational leadership, as well as to other regional leadership innovations.
