Symposium on Binghamton’s Urban Ecosystem Initiative

BINGHAMTON, NY – The newly formed Binghamton Urban Ecosystem Initiative will hold a symposium at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the University Downtown Center.
This new initiative will study the Binghamton area as an ecosystem, in which biological and human interactions are entwined. Symposium topics include:
•  Binghamton as an ecosystem where humans influence nutrient cycles and energy flows.
•  Binghamton as a habitat, where plants and animals adapt to an urban environment.
•  What causes people to bond to nature and how to strengthen the bond.
•  How urban planning that values ecosystem welfare can be best for human welfare.
For each of these areas, the symposium will attempt to formulate a program of basic scientific research to engage the residents of Binghamton.
The initiative is supported by a grant provided by Binghamton University’s Faculty Development Fund.
Reservations are required for this event, which is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided at no cost. To register, e-mail
