K-12 Social Studies Resource Toolkit and Professional Development

The Social Studies Resource Toolkit ("The Toolkit") will be aligned and integrated with the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework and the New York State P-12 Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects.

The Toolkit will focus on implementation of the Inquiry Arc, as presented in the College, Career, and Civic Life for Social Studies State Standards ("C3 Framework"), including the four dimensions: (1) Developing questions and planning inquiries, (2) Applying disciplinary concepts and tools, (3) Evaluating sources and using evidence and (4) Communicating conclusions and taking informed action.

The bulk of the activity related to this project centers on the creation of high-quality, flexible, and ambitious curriculum units that will support and extend the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework. As a direction-setting document, the Framework offers guidance as to the scope of content and skills that New York state students will need in order to be ready for college, career, and civic life. The Resource Toolkit offers the kind of practical curriculum exemplars that will help New York teachers craft the lessons and units that will enable the realization of the Framework's aims.
