The University Police have recently received several reports of an active Phishing Scam targeting students. The scam begins with an email sent to a student from an email address of "email@example.com"
THIS IS NOT A LEGITIMATE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY EMAIL ADDRESS AND IS NOT ASSOCIATED IN ANY WAY WITH BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY'S HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT. IT IS A SPOOFED ADDRESS!
The scammer offers the student employment that they can do from their home or residence hall. The scammer says that he is involved in the sales of artwork, costumes, and other such items and spends a lot of time overseas acquiring items for sale and needs assistance in running the business. The employment offer involves managing sales transactions on-line. The scam then involves asking the student for bank account information and routing information so that money can be deposited into the student's account, or in some cases a new account set up by the student. The scammer then deposits a large sum of money into the student's account and asks that a check be sent to him via Western Union for a specified dollar amount, smaller than the money deposited. This is all done very quickly before the bank is able to determine the money deposited in the account is not legitimate, leaving the student on the hook for money paid out to the scammer once the check has been sent and cashed by the scammer.
The University Police and ITS are working on this case and determining if these emails can be blocked from being delivered to binghamton.edu addresses.
IF YOU RECEIVE ONE OF THESE SCAM EMAILS, DO NOT RESPOND OR PURSUE EMPLOYMENT WITH THIS PERSON. IT IS A SCAM COMING FROM OVERSEAS, MUCH LIKE OTHER PHISHING SCAMS THAT SEEM TO APPEAR FROM TIME TO TIME. SIMPLY DELETE IT FROM YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT.
