SP2.8: Task Force Study of Approaches to Graduate Study Success
This project supports continuous quality improvement in graduate education through analysis of data regarding time to degree, persistence, job placements and student perceptions of enhancements and barriers to success. The project completed updating and analysis of the time to degree data for 2012 graduates and has preliminary data on persistence. We also conducted a focus group with graduate students to understand what they need to be successful. To develop ways to gather job placement data, we have met with the Career Development Center and with Alumni Affairs, and we will gather three years of doctoral placement information from graduate programs. Data collection and analysis forms an ongoing part of the Graduate School's activity.
Goals advanced under this project:
- Become a Nationally Recognized University for Outstanding Doctoral Education
- Prepare undergraduates seeking graduate degrees for the challenges of graduate school
- Prepare students to enter the workforce and successfully navigate their own career choices
- Enhance diversity of the faculty, staff, and administration of the university.
Indicators of success for these goals are:
- Doctoral Student Enrollment
- Quality of Incoming Doctoral Students (GPA, GRE, GMAT)
- Number of Doctoral Students on Funded Projects, including Private Foundation awards to students (Reasearch Foundation and Binghamton University Foundation)
- Increase percentage of undergraduates accepted into graduate school
- Increase percentage of alumni who are working in their field within three years of graduating
- Percentage of divisions and departments that have implemented at least three aspects of their strategies to expand diversity awareness and respect for diversity.
Milestones completed as of last progress report:
- Achieved modest reduction in total time to degree from 6.8 years to 6.7 years.
- Collected data on job placements for all doctoral programs, July 2014 and July 2015; sharing data continues.
- Met with groups of students to gather information about perceived supports and barriers for success.
