SP5.4 Network High Speed Redundant Link to Internet

Goals Advanced: SP5-Goal 3

How will we know that the project was a success? Which indicator is it likely to move? Server and program availability, customer satisfaction

When will success be realized? Project completed

Milestones since the last update:

This project was completed on September 18, 2013 and has already shown successful results of its implementation. With the addition of the redundant link, the University felt no downtime during two internet carrier failures that occurred during the spring 2014 semester.

Previous to the installation of the second connection, the University commodity bandwidth was capped at 1.8GB/sec of traffic. With the second connection, the campus can now expand its bandwidth as needed to a maximum of 4GB/sec which will support the initial demands of distance learning initiatives at Binghamton University. Third, the campus now supports much greater end user demands for internet bandwidth. Prior to the installation, the campus allowed students a maximum of 2mb/sec of internet bandwidth per connection. With the additional resources, each student connection is allowed 10mb/sec of bandwidth, a five-fold increase in service level.
