In conjunction with the August appointment of Valerie Hampton as Chief Diversity Officer for the campus, Executive Vice President and Provost Donald Nieman has appointed Daryl Santos, professor of systems science and industrial engineering and director of the Integrated Electronics Engineering Center (IEEC), as vice provost for diversity to work with Hampton in her new role.

The newly created vice provost position will help the Division of Academic Affairs be more proactive as the campus recruits faculty and staff in this time of growth, said Nieman. “Daryl is an outstanding scholar and teacher with a deep commitment to diversity. He will work with deans and search committees in developing best practices that will enable us to increase the diversity in our faculty and staff.

“He will also be working with deans and enrollment management to increase the diversity of our student body and to create the most welcoming environment we can here so we can be truly inclusive,” said Nieman. “One of our greatest assets is our diversity, but if we live in pockets, our diversity does us no good.”

“I see this as both a challenging and exciting opportunity to work in this important new direction for the University,” said Santos, who has always been heavily involved in diversity in education. After attending an engineering magnet program at Booker T. Washington, a predominantly black high school in Houston, Santos was part of the COSEP program (similar to Binghamton’s EOP program) at Cornell University, and joined La Unidad Latina/Lambda Upsilon Lambda, a fraternal organization devoted to the advancement of Latinos in higher education. As a graduate student at the University of Houston, he conducted workshops/tutoring-sessions for PROMES, a program to assist engineering students from underrepresented groups.

“Even after joining the faculty here at Binghamton, I have continued to support the EOP program in various activities, have advised LSAMP students on summer research projects, have attended the McNair Scholar conference in Buffalo, have served on the Clark Fellowship committee, and am the founding and ongoing faculty advisor of Binghamton University’s chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE),” Santos said. “It is my sincere hope that my background and passion will help me offer strong support for Val and the University.”

The vice provost role is a half-time position. Santos will continue to direct the IEEC and will still direct graduate students through there. He also expects to serve as a guest lecturer on occasion, and to remain active in service to the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering.
