Information Technology Services activities

Construction
      o University Union Project – Telecommunications installed data, cable TV, wireless, door access and security camera services.
      o Center of Excellence Project - Telecommunications installed 280,000 feet of cable to support data, cable TV, wireless, door access and security camera services.

Infrastructure upgrades
      o Continued with VMware expansion and added 10 new virtual servers to the environment.
      o Incorporated the 10 new servers in the Tivoli backup system.
      o Designed and tested VMware failover scenarios for a multi-site implementation as part of our disaster recovery planning.
      o Updated network documentation with the many changes that have occurred this quarter.
      o Prepared for and participated in PCI compliance testing.
      o Planned for the upgrade of the VMware ESX environment to the latest release over the semester break.

Services
      o ITS has renewed its Internet2 membership for another year. Internet2 members leverage the high-performance network to support and enhance their educational and research missions.
      o ITS has reached agreement with Gartner, Inc., the leading information technology research and advisory company, to extend access to all current students, faculty and staff of Binghamton University. Gartner research includes over 120,000 research documents across 1,200 topics covering all aspects of IT.
      o VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) Project continues to move forward.
           VoIP system software and hardware have been installed in preparation for phasing in the remainder of the campus that is using analog phones.
           Installed 65 ShoreTel VoIP phones for the SSIE and Computer Science departments.

Client support
      o Requests for computer and printer price quotations
           Desktop Support provided over 60 price quotations for new computers and printers during this quarter.
      o Help Desk calls from Oct. 1 to Dec. 10, 2013
           Calls to the ITS Help Desk – 922 phone calls
           Opened Help Desk tickets –  2,013
           Closed tickets by Help Desk (first level support) -  1,396
           Percent of calls closed by level 1 support – 69.3 percent
      o Printing in the public computing labs for fall 2013
           Through Dec. 12, 2013 – 6,009,116 pages were printed in the Pods and Information Commons.
           Printing stats for the fall 2013 term.
      o Computer equipment recycling for 2013 through Dec. 12
           Jan. - March - 27,448 lbs.
           April - June - 10,968 lbs.
           July - Sept. – 17.984 lbs.
           Oct. - present – estimate 12-14,000 lbs.
      o Telecommunications
           Telecom staff responded to 136 repair requests.
           Completed 362 work orders for new service and modifications to existing service.
           Reduced campus-wide cell phone charges by $430/month by restructuring cell phone plans.
      o VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) – 91 average logins per day

Application upgrades
      o Performed upgrades to the campus network firewall to allow the integration of the campus firewall to externally hosted systems.
      o Performed maintenance on Active Directory in preparation for the integration with the identity management project.
      o Upgraded T2 Parking Services System to support credit card payments.
      o Upgrades made to Banner Imaging and Banner Recruiter.
      o Support provided for Medicat system for Decker Health Services.
      o Planned and tested a Blackboard upgrade at the end of December 2013.
      o Upgraded the main web server for PCI compliance.
