Collaborative series educates faculty about student issues

A collaboration between the divisions of Student Affairs, Academic Affairs and Administration took off this fall with a three-part breakfast series where key information about student issues was shared with faculty. About 80 faculty attended each of the breakfasts in the series.

The first continental breakfast and discussion focused on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and featured Vice President for Student Affairs Brian Rose and University Counsel Barbara Scarlett presenting the most current information about student privacy issues and the legal landscape for privacy.

The second breakfast in the series, held Oct. 22, brought Center for Learning and Teaching Director James Pitarresi, a distinguished teaching professor of mechanical engineering, to the table to discuss ways to improve the University’s core academic efforts in strengthening teaching and learning. Pitarresi discussed new teaching strategies, ways for faculty to approach to existing courses and ways to design new ones.

The final breakfast in the fall semester was held Nov. 18, and was focused on the faculty’s role in recruiting top students in a dialogue with Sandra Starke, vice provost for enrollment management.

Each session included time for questions and answers. It’s hoped that this series will become an annual one.
