First campus-wide room clean-out resource collection drive

The majority of Binghamton University students participated in the inaugural Room Clean-Out Resource Collection as they moved out at the close of the spring semester, depositing over 15,000 pounds of usable clothing, toiletries, bedding, household items, as well as electric and electronic equipment in collection bins located in each residential building.

All donations were given to The Rescue Mission, Salvation Army and Geodis (electronic/electric recycler).

Some of the donated computer equipment will be refurbished and loaned out to community residents through Binghamton’s Bridging the Digital Divide Program.

The collection project’s main goals were to 1) help area residents in need of resources and 2) greatly reduce the volume of waste to be disposed of in the landfill by having students leave their unwanted items in the collection bins rather than throwing them away.

The drive was a joint initiative between the Center for Civic Engagement and Residential Life, with two undergraduate students, Dali Lu and Melina Martin, serving as the key coordinators.

Many students, parents, and cleaning staff expressed excitement that there is now a convenient way to donate unwanted but usable items. The Center for Civic Engagement expects that this worthwhile project will continue in future years.
