Spain’s ‘dark side’ research featured in national news reports

Seth Spain, assistant professor of organizational behavior and leadership in the School of Management, made the headlines in July when he was featured on CBS This Morning and in The Wall Street Journal for his research on the dark personality traits of managers. Lead author of a research review published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior, Spain and his colleagues reviewed more than 140 studies on people who have mild levels of dark personality traits: narcissists, manipulators and anti-social people.

Leaders who manage from the dark side are adept at creating wedges between co-workers, keeping tight control of teams and looking good in front of higher-ups. Spain will share his research with alumni during a special presentation on campus Saturday, Oct. 18, as part of Homecoming 2014.
