How Can we Create a Sustainable Binghamton?
By: Travis Clines
What makes a community sustainable? That was the question posed in this Scientific American article and one that we will be looking into in this month’s SUNY BEST. The article goes on to answer the question quoting many organizations including the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) which defined a sustainable community as “economically, environmentally and socially healthy and resilient.”
That very sentence describes our community. We live in the confluence of two great rivers with natural beauty in any direction you look. The influx of students combining with the residents of our area creates a miniature melting pot which keeps us vibrant and ever-changing. Economically we are growing and diversifying our “economic portfolio.” We are investing in ourselves by supporting our local small businesses as well as helping grow our ecosystem of entrepreneurship in the region. If keeping our region sustainable sounds interesting to you, please register for February’s SUNY BEST here. Hope to see you there!
