NEW Learning Community at Mountainview – STEAM = STEM + Arts

Mountainview's new Learning Community brings together students who are interested in studying the intersection of science and art. Industries around the world are now realizing that the old acronym STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), doesn't quite add up. It lacks a crucial element essential to innovation – creative thinking. Singular emphasis on left-brain logical, analytical education has produced students who can crunch numbers and chart data but then lack the imagination to apply the information creatively. Adding Art and Design to the traditionally-based technological education will provide students skills to think beyond the obvious and into the innovative.

Art and design isn't just about drawing. Creative thinking can be encouraged with music, literature, theater, fine and applied art. Binghamton University and Mountainview are uniquely qualified to offer this learning initiative with excellent Fine Art, Humanities, Science and Technology programs on campus. All members of the Learning Community are required to take UNIV 280D and G, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math, Seminar 1 and 2; two credit courses offered during fall and spring semesters. Members of the STEAM Learning Community all live on the same floor, providing them with the opportunity to interact, converse and plan with individuals who may be from different disciplines but share their interest in the combination of art and technology.
