Facebook Best Practices

Facebook is a popular social network that can be a great asset to universities and colleges. Binghamton University has a main University Facebook page along with other smaller pages for departments, clubs, and buildings. Here are some tips on how to begin a Facebook page of your own.

If you have been authorized by your supervisor to create an official Binghamton social media site or a video for posting in locations such as YouTube, please contact Ryan Yarosh at Binghamton University’s Office of Communications and Marketing for an approved logo and other images. This is also to ensure coordination with other Binghamton sites and content.

1)   Go to www.facebook.com and click on “Create a Page.” This is located under the “sign-up” section.

2)   The first step is to select what category you want the page to be listed as. Search through each of the drop-down menus to find out which category best fits your organization.

3)   Now you must name the Facebook page. This name will be displayed at the top of the page and will also be how people can search to find the page. It is optional whether or not you want to add Binghamton University to the title but if you decide to add it, it will make it easier to direct people to it and let them know that you are associated with the University.

4)   Now your page has been created. From here you can fill in information about your organization, create discussion boards, and post pictures and videos.

There are different sections that you can use on Facebook including the wall, information, discussion boards, events, and photo and video posts. 

How to use the Information Section:

How the information tab is organized depends on how you decided to categorize your organization. Look around the tab and fill in whatever information you feel is pertinent to your information and the people who will be viewing your page. Most of the information you put there will deal with your organization’s address/location, hours, other websites, and mission statement.

Next to the Information tab there is a +. Click on this to add discussion, photo, video, links, notes, and events tabs to your page.

Photos and Videos:

If you choose to add photos or videos to your Facebook page it is very simple. Add the tab to your page and click either upload pictures or video, depending on which one you choose to add. Facebook will guide you through how to upload photos and videos. In your security settings you can decide who will be able to see what photos and videos.

Discussions:

The discussions tab allows fan and administrators to post comments and questions for discussion. This is a good resource for polls, questions, and updates. It allows users to create discourses with others and have questions answered.

Events:

Add the events tab if you want to update fans about upcoming events your organization has. This is useful if you have frequent performances, lectures, or other forms of events that you want to attract a large audience to. By creating an event you can post the date, time, location, and details of the event. From there you can invite friends and followers on Facebook who will RSVP to your event.

Other tabs can be added such as Youtube and Twitter. There are additional applications to add to Facebook in order to add these tabs to your page.

Two important aspects of managing a Facebook account are monitoring the page often and promoting the page. There are various ways of promoting the page. Some ideas are adding a message about the page to B-line, posting flyers around campus, inviting friends on Facebook to become a fan, and becoming a fan of other pages. By becoming a fan of other pages you open up your network and make it easier for people to find your page. Monitoring the page often is important as people can post whatever videos, photos, or comments they want. Check the page to make sure everything on it is appropriate at all times.

Finally, the Binghamton University logo should be located somewhere on the page to ensure that people know you are in fact affiliated with the University.

Privacy settings allow you to monitor who can find and view your page. You can even block specific people from viewing your information. You can also choose specific sections of the page to keep private depending on what settings you select.

Now that you have successfully created a Facebook page you can invite friends to become fans of your page. You can also add different applications to your page if you have the desire.  The Help section of Facebook is a great resource for any questions you may have about how to do or change something on your page.
