Types of Employment
Undergraduate Federal Work Study (FWS)
Undergraduate students employed in FWS jobs receive wages subsidized by federal government funds. Eligibility for undergraduate FWS is based on your financial need and is granted to you as part of your financial aid package and based upon your filing of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students must have FWS as part of their financial aid in order to apply for FWS positions.
Eligibility for a part-time FWS job does not guarantee you a job. On-campus and off-campus jobs are limited, and employers hire quickly at the start of each semester. We recommend you access hireBING, review FWS jobs and contact the employer(s) as soon as you arrive on campus.
FWS students are paid directly (via a paycheck) by employers so FWS is not applied as a credit on a student's semester bill.

On-Campus FWS jobs
During the interview and hiring process for on-campus jobs, you will be required to complete student employment paperwork, and to provide documentation to the Office of Human Resources. Federal regulation requires you to submit an "employment eligibility form," (called an I-9 form) if you plan to accept either a FWS position or a temporary service position on campus. Fulfilling such requirements before your first day of work assures a paycheck is issued every two weeks. Off-campus FWS jobs (Binghamton University Student Employment Initiative)
The Binghamton University Student Employment Initiative is a collaborative program with of Financial Aid Services and the Greater Binghamton/Southern Tier New York community. For more information, click here >>
All Binghamton University undergraduate students who are interested in participating in this program must have FWS funding, have a willingness to work off campus and have reliable transportation. During the interview and hiring process for off-campus jobs, you will be required to complete employment paperwork and to provide documentation to the employer. These requirements also assure you will be issued a paycheck for the hours you work. For questions about forms and documents, please contact the employer’s Human Resources Department/Representative.
