Program Overview

The Division of Speech and Language Pathology (SLP) offers an undergraduate minor in speech and hearing science, which provides students with the basis necessary to develop foundational knowledge in normal and disordered processes of speech, language and swallowing.

Some courses to consider in your first year:

• SLP 408 - Anat&Phys of Speech/Lang/Hear

  This course is designed as an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanisms. The speech systems (respiration, phonation, articulation, and resonation) are discussed in terms of both anatomical landmarks and basic physiology. Anatomy and physiology of mastication and deglutition, as well as hearing, are also introduced. Basic neuroanatomy and neurophysiology are also covered in this course. 4 credits No pre-requisites Course is offered in the fall semester Levels: Graduate, Undergraduate

• SLP 414 - Intro Communication Disorders

  This course is designed to cover the broad topic of communication disorders. The primary focus of the course is to provide students an introduction to communication disorders and the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. Students will also be challenged to think critically, solve problems, and identify important issues related to communication disorders. Students will be provided a perspective on societal views toward individuals with communication disorders and the personal experiences of living with or having a family member who has a communication disorder. 4 credits No pre-requisites Course is offered in the fall & spring semesters Levels: Undergraduate

• SLP 409 - Speech & Hearing Science

  This course is a detailed exploration of the speech and language production system and hearing mechanism with relation to the auditory environment and perception of speech. Information on aerodynamic and acoustic parameters of speech, anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanisms, the neural basis of speech, language, and hearing and finally the speech perception system is provided during this course. The course is designed with lab experiences so students can get hands-on practice. 2 credits No pre-requisites Course is offered in the fall & spring semester Levels: Undergraduate

• SLP 420 - Audiology & Aural Rehab

  This course will provide introduction to audiology and aural rehabilitation. Included in this course will be the discussion of the acoustic and perceptual characteristics of sound.
