Center for Integrated Watershed Studies

About

The interconnected nature of watersheds makes them an ideal defining unit for our interdisciplinary center. Watersheds, which include both aquatic and terrestrial areas, provide key ecosystem functions and services, including habitat for wildlife, nutrient cycling, stormwater absorption and filtration, along with social and cultural benefits to the public. Yet, global change continues to threaten the health and stability of watersheds worldwide.

The Center for Integrated Watershed Studies (CIWS) at Binghamton University (BU) serves as a central hub of “expertise on natural features of watershed and human effects on watersheds.” Towards this goal, CIWS integrates two fundamental missions: (1) To generate innovative and transformative research on watersheds and (2) To broadly communicate and implement research findings to protect watersheds by fostering meaningful relationships via outreach with community partners at the local, state, national and international levels.
