Halloween safety tips and reminders

Halloween is a fun time, but it is important to be vigilant about your personal safety. There are many things to consider to ensure your well-being and that of our BinghamtonU community.

The Binghamton Dean of Students Office, in collaboration with the University Police Department and the city of Binghamton Police Department shares the following tips to help you stay safe and respectful of others on Halloween:

  • Travel in pairs or groups after dark. There is safety in numbers.
  • Stay in well-lit areas and on streets where there are a lot of people.
  • When walking, walk with a purpose.
  • When going out at night, have a plan.
  • Talk to friends about what to do if you get separated, and think about your transportation needs ahead of time.
  • If a friend becomes intoxicated or ill, call for help and stay with your friend until help arrives.
  • Your well-being and the safety of you and your friends are a shared responsibility. If you see something happening, don’t be a bystander. Summon help immediately and intervene if you can do so safely.
  • If you drink, do so in moderation.
  • Never drive a vehicle after consuming alcohol and never get into a car with an intoxicated driver.
  • Don’t wear a costume that demeans, mocks or sexualizes someone else’s culture.

These actions might sound obvious, but it’s important to repeat them so they stay at the top of your mind while you’re having fun this weekend.

Remember, police will be out in full force for the Halloween weekend, so make good decisions!

Wishing you a safe and Happy Halloween!
