Summer Research Opportunities

Make Your Summer Count.
Dive into the World of Research.

Want to do real research — and get an experience that opens doors for you?
Looking to challenge your mind, future-proof your résumé and have some fun?

Our summer research programs provide students intending to major in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields with a one-of-a-kind research experience. Working alongside faculty and fellow students on cutting-edge research projects, you'll tackle weighty world issues, build powerful relationships, and set a course for college and career success. Through this structured research experience, students learn research techniques, acquire background on a research question and follow through on the initial phases of a real research problem. In addition to research skills, the SRI program emphasizes development of workplace skills that employers, graduate schools and professional schools, such as medical schools, expect in college graduates: communication, collaborative, project management, and leadership skills.

We have two summer research programs; The Summer Research Immersion Program (SRI) and the Fast-track Research Immersion Program (FtRI). You can learn more about each of these programs by visiting the respective program page found on the directory to the right.

Recordings from previous informational webinars on SRI and FtRI are posted for viewing on their respective pages. Advertisement for the 2025 informational webinar will be posted here once determined.

Unique Benefits

  • Growth

Your personal and professional growth: turbocharged. You'll learn methods of scientific research and develop your skills of critical thinking and collaborative research earlier than most undergraduate students.

  • Direction

Your future will be brighter. You'll acquire a solid foundation toward your chosen career or advanced academic studies.

  • Recognition

People will know your name. You'll find opportunities to publish in professional journals, present posters at conferences, seek industry internships, be considered for fellowships, and a whole lot more.

  • Access

Renowned faculty members work with you. You'll build powerful connections with influential Binghamton University professors and lay the foundation for requesting valuable letters of recommendation, which are often required for scholarships internships and graduate school applications.

  • Friendship

Great team members make for great friends. You'll work alongside students who are excited about the same things as you are and build important, long-lasting relationships along the way.

Research Streams

Participants investigate exciting research topics all summer long! You’ll conduct research in what are known as Research Streams, specially created research courses for emerging fields in sciences and engineering.

SRI and FtRI program pages will indicate which Research Streams will be running for the summer.
