Our Keynote Speaker:
Dr. Diana Sinton, Senior Research Fellow at University Consortium for GIS
“GIS and Employment Today: Topsy-Turvy or Smooth Sailing?”
Abstract:
Are the gaps real or only perceived between our geospatial curricula, the needs of
the associated workforce, and the expectations of graduates? What difference does
it make that the academic geospatial community lacks an accrediting body and has a
slow-to-be-accepted professional certification process? Do the stakeholders in the
public and private sectors, including our universities and the federal government,
have any incentives to address these concerns? Join us for GIS Day to learn about
these ideas and more!
Diana Sinton is a Senior Research Fellow for the University Consortium for Geographic
Information Science (UCGIS), where she previously served as its Executive Director.
She also teaches and advises in the geospatial sciences at Cornell University (Ithaca,
New York). Her interests include the ways in which geospatial technologies support
teaching and learning, especially in higher education. She has a PhD in geography
from Oregon State University and proudly keeps her GISP credential current as well.

What is GIS Day?
GIS Day is a day dedicated to showing, teaching, and inspiring other with the use of GIS technology. This event aims to spread enthusiasm and help people learn how to use GIS for themselves—in their work, in their classes, where they volunteer, or even for their hobbies and interests.
GIS Day was founded 25 years ago by ESRI President and Co-Founder Jack Dangermond. Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS Day. He considered the event a good initiative for people to learn about geography and the many uses of GIS. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate.
