Martha Rojas Urrego
Global and national leader on conservation of nature, sustainable development, gender equality and humanitarian relief
Background
Martha Rojas Urrego, is a global leader with more than 25 years of international and national experience ranging from on the ground work to the highest levels of international policy on conservation of nature, sustainable development, gender equality and humanitarian relief. She served as Secretary-General of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands until August 2022. She was Deputy-Secretary General a.i and Head of Global Advocacy at CARE International, and Head of Global Policy at the International Union for Conservation of Nature -IUCN. Before that she served as Director-General of National Parks and negotiator of Colombia in several multilateral environmental agreements. Throughout her career she has championed gender equality and women’s and girl’s empowerment in multilateral agreements including the Convention on Biological Diversity, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the Ramsar Convention, and she is an Alumni of the International Gender Champions network. She is a Colombian, French and Swiss national.
