POLICIES: Laptop Loaner Program

Laptop Loaner Program Procedure

Purpose
Information Technology Services will loan a Dell laptop computer or MacBook Pro, if available, to any University faculty or staff member who has a University owned computer in for diagnosis and or repair with the ITS Help Desk or Technical Support. Supply is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis and offered to those individuals whose computer will be in for repair for at least 24 hours.

Computers are not available for loan for any other purpose.

NOTE: The COVID Student Laptop & Hotspot Loaner program has ended and has been replaced with a new program. The new program provides 3 types of laptop loans for students: short-term, long-term (student in need), and device repair. Hotspots are no longer available for loan. MORE INFORMATION...

Procedure
When a University owned machine has been brought to the ITS Help Desk to be diagnosed, a loaner computer, if available, will be offered while the computer is in for diagnosis and repair. The loaner will be available to the employee for the duration of the repair and must be returned to ITS when the computer is returned to the employee.
The employee will be asked to sign for the loaner computer upon receipt.

Computer Use
The loaner computers will be used according to the Binghamton University Computer and Acceptable Use Policy and the Guidelines for Data Security. Usage of the loaner laptop is restricted to University business.

It is highly recommended that you connect to your network storage drive, Google Drive or a removable disk drive to access and save files. Avoid saving files on the loaner computer. Technical Support and ITS are not responsible for data files saved to the computer. Technical Support will wipe the computer upon its return.

Borrowers will not have administrative rights on the loaner laptop and the installation of specialized software on the loaner computer will be considered on a case by case basis.

Loaner Return
The loaner must be returned to the ITS Help Desk when picking up the repaired computer. The employee must return the loaner and all components in the same condition as it was received. The borrower or the borrower's department may be responsible for any damages or for lost or stolen equipment.
