Binghamton University has partnered with Google to provide our students, faculty and staff tools to enhance communication and collaboration.

Google Apps Education Edition is a suite of hosted communication and collaboration applications designed for institutions of higher education. Google Apps Education Edition provides additional features beyond email such as larger mail boxes, expanded data storage, a calendar system, documentation storage and a website creation tool. 

Communication Tools - GOOGLE HELP CENTER

Gmail (Bmail) – storage, built-in IM, voice and video chat, mobile access, spam and virus protection, IMAP, POP and Google powered email search.

Benefits –

  • Same email address – your address remains the same (username@binghamton.edu)
  • No user sign-up – accounts will be created by the ITS department
  • More storage – Bmail powered by Google offers free storage
  • Larger attachments – send and receive 25mb attachments
  • Spam and virus protection – less spam and viruses in your inbox
  • No Ads – all current faculty, staff and students accounts are ad free. After you graduate, you may be presented with ads just like a normal Gmail account
  • You can keep your mail address for life as long as you graduate or retire from Binghamton University.

Gmail confidential mode – users can help protect sensitive information from unauthorized access using Gmail confidential mode. Recipients of messages in confidential mode don't have the option to forward, copy, print, or download messages, including attachments. Important: Although confidential mode helps prevent the recipients from accidentally sharing an email, it doesn't prevent recipients from taking screenshots or photos of your messages or attachments. Recipients who have malicious programs on their computer may be able to copy or download your messages or attachments.

Google Calendar – share calendars with anyone on campus – class or exam schedules, group meetings, or events.

Google Chat – Chat makes it easy for teams to be able to get their work done in one place. From direct messages to group conversations, Chat helps teams collaborate easily and efficiently. With dedicated, virtual rooms to house projects over time — plus threaded conversations — Chat makes it simple to track progress and follow up tasks. Chat currently supports 28 languages and each room can support up to 8,000 members.

Collaboration Tools - GOOGLE HELP CENTER

Google Drive - store everything, share anything with Google Drive. Google Drive is available on your Mac, PC, Android or IOS device. Google Drive can be downloaded at: http://google.com/drive/download.

Google Docs - Word processing for teams: Create and edit text documents right in your browser—no dedicated software required. Multiple people can work at the same time, and every change is saved automatically.

ITS has added Turnitin’s Draft Coach product to Binghamton’s Google Doc Add-Ons for all to use. This plagiarism checking add-on allows anyone to run a report that will check a Google Doc for similarity against Turnitin’s vast database. Google Sites – team website creation with videos, images, gadgets and documents integration.

Google Video – securely share videos with your school.

Google Groups – Create your own moderated forums and mailing lists featuring strong sharing and management controls.

Google Meet – Google Meet makes it easy to start a secure video meeting. Join from any modern web browser or download the app, and you're ready to go.
