12 Reasons Why Binghamton is a Top College Town

We all know Binghamton University is the best public university in the Northeast, but did you know that the City of Binghamton is highly rated as well? While Binghamton may not be the biggest city, it has a great college atmosphere, and more than just students can attest to that. Binghamton was rated among the top 20 college towns in the U.S. by The American Institute for Economic Research and Business Insider, and was named one of the top 30 small college towns with a great quality of life by Best Choice Schools. Amazing food scene

Binghamton has a vaiety of unique restaurants and bars, making it a foodie’s dream. Twice a year the restaurants even team up during Restaurant Week to offer fixed price, three-course meals, with proceeds going to charity.

Endless entertainment

There’s always something to do in Binghamton. Whether it’s events on campus or in the heart of the city, you’ll never be bored here. From cultural showcases in the Anderson Center to open mics at small cafes, to large-scale concerts at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena, there are always a wide array of events happening in the area.

Unique traditions

Did you know that Binghamton is the Carousel Capital of the World? The area also has several unique festivals and traditions. The city is home to the famous spiedie sandwich, and the community enjoys Wing Fest, Mac and Cheese Fest and LUMA, a projection arts festival, each year.

Beautiful views

You don’t have to go far to see scenic views of nature. Binghamton has several parks and areas perfect for a stroll including Ostiningo Park, Cutler Botanic Garden and Recreation Park. Binghamton University also has its very own 182-acre Nature Preserve which includes trails, a bridge and stunning views of a beaver pond. However, if you’re looking for a swim or change of scenery, you can take a short drive to Nathaniel Cole Park.

Downtown Binghamton is bustling

Downtown Binghamton is home to several restaurants, shops and academic buildings, making it the perfect place for students to study and relax. The area is also full of venues for students who are 21 and over, including pubs, breweries, dance clubs and hookah lounges. State Street is perfect for those who love the nightlife experience, and it’s easily accessible by bus.

Transportation is a breeze

No car, no problem! You can easily travel from campus to downtown Binghamton for free via Broome County Transit and the University’s student-run bus service. If walking is more your style, there will soon be a sidewalk that connects campus to downtown.

It's a creative hub

Binghamton boasts several events for those looking for some creativity or artistic flair. The area has several museums, is home to the best philharmonic in the region, and every month the First Friday Art Walk hosts new art exhibitions for the community. Students can even see Broadway shows through Broadway in Binghamton.

Athletics galore

Sports fans always have a team to root for in Binghamton. The University has its own Division 1 athletics program with 19 different teams, and the city is home to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, a minor league baseball team, and The Senators, a professional ice hockey team.

Luxurious downtown housing

For students living off campus, there are several apartment complexes located in the heart of downtown Binghamton. These modern living spaces are within walking distance to popular restaurants and businesses, as well as the University Downtown Center.

Year-round fun

No matter what season, there’s always something fun to do in Binghamton. Embrace autumn by going apple picking at Apple Hills Farm, buy some fresh produce at the Broome County Regional Farmers Market or visit some furry friends at Ross Park Zoo. Whatever you decide to do, the options are endless.

Businesses grow and thrive

New businesses are constantly sprouting up and flourishing in Binghamton. START-UP NY and the University’s Small Business Development Center help people start their own companies. The Small Business Development Center has helped clients raise $210 million in private and public funding and has helped create 11,000 jobs. Several Binghamton University alums have created successful businesses in the area, including Muckles Inc.

Strong ties to the community

Pharmacy Building

Binghamton University is constantly expanding into downtown Binghamton and the surrounding areas to provide more research opportunities and jobs. The University Downtown Center, the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Southern Tier Incubator all help connect the campus to the community. The University’s Center for Civic Engagement also helps students support the community by volunteering and giving back.
