Binghamton University changes name to Binghampton University
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – In yet another brilliant move from the administration, Binghamton University will add a “p” to its name and will now be known as Binghampton University. Administrators felt that the change was long overdue, as many have been pronouncing the name with a silent “p” for decades.
“People have been spelling our school’s name with a “p” for so long, that we felt that we should get with the times and reflect the will of the people,” said Binghampton University President Harvey Stenger. “Effective today, we are officially known as Binghampton University. It really rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?”
Stenger noted that the added “p” isn’t just helpful, but reflective of the University’s worldwide, uncontested reputation as the “premier” public university in the northeast.
“Now when people say our name, they’ll not only pronounce it correctly, but will think, ‘Wow, that ‘p’ really makes me think ‘premier!’” said Stenger.
Stenger also noted that practically every student is from Long Island, which is home to a number of towns with “hampton” in their name: Bridgehampton, Westhampton, Hampton Bays, etc.
“Our students are already used to names like this, so we figured we’d make their transition to campus easier by actually spelling the ‘hampton’ part of our name in the commonly used way,” said Stenger. “Hopefully, the city of Binghamton will take notice and make the change.”
Staff will be busy adding the letter “p” to all signage and websites over the coming months. If you own any apparel with dated “Binghamton” branding, the University Sewing Committee will stich in a “p” to bring it up to code.
