Completing a whirlwind few weeks that included his final collegiate start, graduation, and first foray into pro ball, left-handed pitcher Nick Wegmann was chosen by Seattle in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on June 6. He will depart his current independent-league Washington Wild Things and await assignment by the Mariners.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime and it’s what every little kid dreams of,” Wegmann said after being selected. “I am still in awe of what just happened.”

Wegmann was with the Wild Things readying for a night home game in Western Pennsylvania when he got word and had to shift gears, pack and prepare for his new professional team.

“I am so thankful for all the coaches and teammates I had at Binghamton,” he added. “They mean the world to me. I am also thankful for the Seattle Mariners and the opportunity they have given me.”

Wegmann becomes the 14th draft pick to come out of the Bearcats’ program since 1990 and eighth in the last seven years. He is the third Binghamton pitcher to go in the last three years and his selection gives Binghamton at least one MLB draft pick in each of the last five years.

He finished his Binghamton career as a two-time all-conference pitcher. This spring he went 3-7 with a 3.71 ERA, leading a Binghamton pitching staff that ranked No. 1 in the conference in ERA (4.46). Wegmann tossed two complete games and struck out 56 in a team-high 70.1 innings. He finished his four-year career with nine wins, 142 strikeouts and a 3.78 ERA. After signing with Washington, he made four relief appearances and notched his first professional strikeout in his one-inning debut on May 29. He recorded three strikeouts in 3.1 innings, including one in his final outing on June 5, one day before being taken by the Mariners.
