Thomas Harding to lead Psychological Clinic

Graduate students in doctoral training program help to staff center

The Binghamton University Psychological Clinic appointed long-time assistant adjunct professor Thomas Harding as its new director.

“[Harding] has always had among the best teaching ratings of the whole faculty,” said Matthew Johnson, chair of the Psychology Department. “So, we were thrilled when he expressed interest in the position of director of Psychological Clinic when the position was vacated.”

Teaching at Binghamton University since 1986 is just one of Harding’s accomplishments in the field of psychology. He has worked as clinical field supervisor for the Psychological Research and Training Clinic at the University, among other community involvement.

“Tom brings organizational ability, clinical savvy, and years of work and knowledge in the field of psychological assessment to the position,” said Steven J. Lynn, distinguished professor of psychology and director of clinical training for the clinic. “We are incredibly fortunate to have Tom as our clinic director.”

The Psychological Clinic is an outpatient facility run by the Psychology Department that has provided counseling services to local community members and students for more than 30 years. Graduate students in clinical psychology doctoral training program, who also work with clinical psychology faculty supervisors, staff the clinic. Harding will be responsible for leading both.

“The students in the clinical psychology Ph.D. program will benefit from [Harding’s] years of experience and knowledge,” Johnson said. “In addition, the community members who come to the clinic for mental health services will benefit from having Tom’s steady and insightful leadership guiding the clinic. He is an outstanding addition to our faculty and university.”

In his new role, Harding said he is looking forward to translating his 30-year affiliation with the clinical psychology graduate program at Binghamton University into such a dynamic leadership role.

“The opportunity to do this work full-time is tremendously exciting,” Harding said. “I hope to carry on the Psychological Clinic’s rich tradition of providing students high-level training opportunities while also providing important psychological services to campus and community members.”
