Along with recent news of being elevated to the highest category for research universities, a number of Binghamton University graduate programs appear in annual rankings compiled by U.S. News & World Report.

Seventeen University programs made the cut in the publication’s Best Graduate Schools 2020 ranking. Fourteen programs are in the top 100 of their disciplines: clinical psychology, earth sciences, economics, English, history, mathematics, political science, psychology, public affairs, social work. business, engineering, industrial engineering and sociology. Engineering, nursing, education and mathematics all moved up from the prior year.

The University’s engineering program made the biggest leap, up 32 spots from #127 in last year’s rankings to #95 this year, with education close behind, moving up 31 spots from #158 to #127.

“These rankings underscore the excellence Binghamton University has across the board at the graduate level,” said President Harvey Stenger. “As we continue to raise our research profile and national reputation with our Carnegie classification as a very high research university, our focus on graduate student recruitment and the education they receive at Binghamton will also draw attention. Graduate education remains a high priority for our campus.”

“Our faculty are the foundation of the exceptional graduate-level programs we have at Binghamton University,” said Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Donald Nieman. “Binghamton’s reputation is growing and rankings such as these shine a spotlight on the many ways our faculty cultivate a valuable learning environment so our graduate students can flourish.”

The Best Graduate Schools rankings are based on expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students.

Rankings data come from statistical surveys of more than 2,054 programs and reputation surveys sent to more than 22,018 academics and professionals, conducted in fall 2018 and early 2019.

Extended rankings and details on each discipline’s ranking methodology can be found with the rankings tables, which are available online.
