An article written by Mario Ortiz, dean and professor at Binghamton University’s Decker School of Nursing, was selected as the best article of 2018 by Nursing Science Quarterly. The article, “Patient-centered care: Nursing knowledge and policy,” appeared in Volume 31, Issue 3 of the publication, which appeared in June 2018.

The abstract for the article, which has been downloaded more than 5,500 times, reads: “There has been much written about the importance of care that is centered on persons and their loved ones. Patient-centered care has been central to nursing practice and unique nursing knowledge. This central focus provides an opportunity for nurses to develop policies that may affect practice so that practice is consistent with a distinctive knowledge base. The purpose of this paper is to discuss patient-centered care and nursing theory.”

Ortiz joined Binghamton University in 2016 and is leading the University’s nursing school as it transitions to a college of nursing and health sciences, expands programming online and prepares to move to a new building in 2020.

He is a board certified community/public health nurse specialist and family nurse practitioner, as well as a respected scholar in national and international arenas for his work on nursing research and practice. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in community health nursing, family nursing, research and theory, and nursing leadership and management. With a record of success in developing healthcare programs and being at the forefront of establishing nurse-led, patient-centered medical homes as primary care clinics, he has also established and nurtured critical partnerships with healthcare providers and policy-makers, and has a rich portfolio of faculty, staff and clinician development. He has garnered millions in endowments and grants to support community care, nurse-led primary care clinics and education.

Ortiz earned bachelor’s degrees in nursing and in the history of the arts, as well as a master’s degree in nursing from Valparaiso University. He also earned a PhD in nursing from Loyola University Chicago. He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, a Fellow in the Nursing Academy of the National Academies of Practice and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
